Past, Present and Future

Thought it would be a good idea to do a post just to look at where I'm coming from with all this, where I am at the moment and my plans for the future.

Past
I have struggled with my weight since I was in primary school. I can remember being aware of this from the age of about 7. Since then I've done numerous diets and read so many diet books, and although I lost weight on these I always put it back on, plus some more. In January 2009 I had reached my heaviest ever at 14st 10. I was really unhappy and knew I had to make some major changes. Using a sensible diet and fitness regime I managed to get down to 12st then I hit a brick wall. It was then that I tried the Ultimate New York Body Plan. Although it is really a bit of a fad diet, doing it taught me so much and has really changed the way I live. I didn't do the plan to a T but made a couple of my own changes. Its basically no alcohol, carbs, fruit or dairy for two weeks with daily exercise. By the fifth day I was exhausted and vomiting but I made changes to the diet and added in some good carbs and in two weeks I had lost 10 pounds. I managed to keep this off, plus lose more. I wouldn't usually recommend a faddy diet like that, but what it did teach me was the effect carbs and protein have on your body, that using protein supplements show real results and that exercising more regularly and doing more weight training really works to help you lose weight and stay trim. Due to doing this diet I have made long term changes and this is why it has been successful, rather than just a short lived fad.

Present
After putting some weight on over Christmas I have managed to get back down to 10st 11. I have been looking for some new inspiration and it was through going a forum on handbag.com that I have found out about blogging and started to read other diet and fitness blogs. I already liked reading fashion and style blogs so I thought that starting my own blog (even if no one read it!) would be a good way to keep me focused and record my journey like a diary that I can look back on.

Future
I have a family holiday planned for June this year and my aim is to lose a little more fat and develop more muscle so that I feel fit and confident in a bikini for the first time in my life! I would also like to work on my overall fitness with a view to doing the Great North Run one day (maybe not this year!). I'm not going to worry to much about what the scales say and think more about how I look. I have just joined JAGs Operation Kick Ass to help keep me on track and I will be taking photos of myself today to use as a comparison.

Overall, what I have realised is that short term diets are totally pointless, the only things that work are long term lifestyle changes that include a healthy attitude to food and exercise.
